Some aspects of the events described in this film are perhaps a little improbable but the acting by the two leading ladies is extremely powerful and the horror of Lebanon at that time is more than fully shoved up one's nose. The female twin shows more interest in the task than the male and her search leads her to the Lebanon where she uncovers unsettling details about her mother's tumultuous and tortuous life during the civil war there in the 1970's, before her emigration to Canada with the twins. A mother's last wishes send twins Jeanne and Simon on a journey to Middle East in search of their tangled roots. I saw this in the theatres years ago, and when the film was done, not a single person moved. The movie is haunting, deep, and heartbreaking. Brutal emotionally, socially, culturally. For French speakers this is Canadian French and even natives of France struggle to understand that! A gritty and gripping tale of religous conflict & intolerance. Interspersed with the twins search are prolonged flashbacks to her mothers harrowing time during the war. Very slow in parts and I skimmed through it. I love when films like this come packaged with fantastic extras.

After having been impressed with previous Denis Villeneuve films such as Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, I felt the time was right to investigate some of his earlier work. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. I'm afraid the lack of subtitles meant I could only view a broad outline of this wonderful movie. Not for the faint hearted! I am definitely watching it again. The film has won many awards but unfortunately only got nominated for an Oscar - it deserves more. That said - this film remained in my mind long after first showing and it is one that I will return to again. Please enable it to continue.

It feels a bit tedious at times, but stick with it because when the pieces of the puzzle start to fall into place, the viewer has the whole picture before the players do. Twin siblings uncover a shocking family secret after they agree to their mother's dying wish: to locate the father they thought was dead, and a brother they never knew existed.
One of my all-time favorite movies, and winner of Best Foreign Film. Without adding a spoiler, this was just not right.
