Was this review helpful? Ryan Reynolds basically made this a decent movie with his acting skills, the rest of the cast are kind of annoying to watch. "The Captive", the latest from eclectic Canadian auteur Atom Egoyan, took a royal beating at the French festival earlier this year mere weeks after the premiere of his critically reviled Memphis Three docudrama "Devil's Knot".The fact that he's been getting mediocre reviews for fourteen years might be proof that a director who once set the world on fire had lost his touch.
Was this review helpful? OK. And for the focus to be the family of the missing girl, I feel it rarely focused on them. 55 out of 89 found this helpful. Was this review helpful? However...

Strike 1. Go watch it and don't let the rating create low expectations. 91 out of 137 found this helpful. 41 out of 57 found this helpful. Jeffrey is shot by Vicky before he kills her and fatally wounds Mika, who dies while being interrogated for Nicole's location. 28 out of 32 found this helpful. They are skeptical of his story, which infuriates him. In addition to that, how completely implausible and ridiculous a premise, totally pointless. The story moves back and forth which i find is pretty cool, but some people might not like it as it can be a little confusing at times. I feel like it was written by teenagers. What the heck? The mother instantly hated and blamed the father for it happening. Clever. Then the part where Ryan Reynolds character has an abusive past was brought up (in reference to plot), then was never to be heard of again. 80 out of 164 found this helpful. Not sure why the rest of it wasn't. 52 out of 80 found this helpful. As you would expect from Egoyan, The Captive has ideas to spare. Was it his lack of inspiration for the role or just horrible directing? Plain and simple, this movie is so ridiculous it's almost funny.

He has set this film in Niagara Falls but it was primarily shot in Sudbury, Ontario. The only thing captive or captivating about this movie is how it ever came into being and why nobody along the way was able to see above all its flaws. Ryan Reynolds does a great job and so do his co-stars. And speaking of Reynolds, what a wooden performance. Was this review helpful? Close. 54 out of 72 found this helpful. He confronts the abductors to buy more time and steals Vicky's cell phone. Mystery! Was this review helpful? Was this review helpful? Tina meets with the police regularly to discuss their case but Matthew, originally a suspect, has become a vigilante in the search for Cassandra. This is like an extended version of 'Prisoners'. The police finally find and rescue Nicole. It is not the first time a low rated movie turns out to be great, but it is certainly the greatest contrast between reviews and the actual movie.

Was this review helpful? The story had no pace. Willy says he will only comply if someone kidnaps Nicole and forces her to reveal what in her past may have inspired her to pursue child protection.
Still don't know much about the wife's character. Mika makes her tell stories on camera to lure in younger children. But once they are ruled out, that should be the end of it! When the abduction first happened, the police immediately suspect the father, which OK yes might happen in reality but to the point that it was done seemed really over the top. It would be more suspicious if Reynolds' character wasn't grieving over his missing daughter, wouldn't it?? Why does he act bizarre?

A few heart pounding scenes. Who is she? I don't usually write reviews (and I watch a lot and read many reviews) but felt compelled to write one about this movie. Its funny that one of the reoccurring lines in the dialog between the father and daughter focused on the word "gimmick" because it seemed as if the director tried to fit every story telling gimmick he could think of into this film. The arrests put Nicole into the public eye. Was this review helpful? Was this review helpful? Additionally, although the film takes place over eight years, all of the scenes take place during winter for dramatic effect.Meanwhile, local contractor Matthew Lane picks up his 9-year-old daughter, Cassandra, after her figure skating practice. For e.g, Speedman's detective finds it suspicious that Reynolds has a shrine to his missing daughter in the back of his truck?

The basic outline of the story showed a lot of promise but it never came together. Matthew calls Jeffrey with their location and plants his Matthew goads the diner staff to call the police by being disruptive. The director made cold direct characters with blunt direct dialogue. The Lane family is reunited at the police station and visit Jeffrey as he recovers in the hospital. Ryan Reynolds is our driving force as his character (and his wife) cannot forget and forgive what happened to them. The cops and parents, hopelessly look for any clue of her being alive. I kept thinking there must be a twist but no, it really was just. Was this review helpful? No depth. honestly... this film is like Disney made a movie about a pedo ring. A father looking for her kidnapped daughter is not something new but its not a typical movie where the father just goes berserk and kills off all the bad people. Look...this movie simply needed to be edited better. The Captive, formerly Queen of the Night and Captives, is a 2014 Canadian thriller film directed by Atom Egoyan with a script he co-wrote with David Fraser.

I will never do that again. The story follows the implications of her kidnapping for her parents and the local police division that never stopped looking for her. Cassandra's mother, Tina Lane, arrives and breaks down in rage at Matthew. as he is taking photos of the truck... On what planet is it suspicious behaviour to have a shrine of your missing daughter?! The villain is a laughable cardboard cutout.
