I know you said they always hide, but make sure they have enough hiding spots anyway, since they are super vulnerable when they're molting. I woke up to find him in this position and assumed he was in the midst of molting. I picture you giving him mouth to mouth lol. So I'm raising 3 (pretty young) crawfish for school. Becuase I pretty sure dead crayfish still have black eyes. If there was a lack of calcium or hardness, it could mess it up. I think he could he be 3 to 5 years old. Below is a summary on how to tell if your crayfish is about to molt. Give him a day or two to see if he comes out of the skin/shell.

Approximately 11 molts are necessary for young crawfish to reach maturity. But if he’s six inches he’s almost definitely not a Mexican dwarf crayHe won’t smell very bad but his eyes will be grey and he’ll feel squishy. Next morning,he had molted. Is he molting? OR it was molting "out in public" and once it finished it went away and hid. In the final states your crayfish may not come out at all during the day. Crayfish - Crawfish Blue crayfish (lobster) died after molting : ... We noticed him start to act strange,so I researched and I figured he was going to molt.
I know that some crabs are said to have a "terminal molt" and can only molt so many times before death, but cannot find any reference to this with crayfish. Maybe he was sick before,especially since he came from petco..so who knows.It's hard to tell with inverts.
