Yip provides exactly that, and so in this sense, the film succeeds.

The film's signature pieces are its fight scenes, but Yip works best in the quieter moments.

The fight spans multiple styles and involves throws and tosses and lots of acrobatic punches and kicks between two Hong Kong screen legends.

"Sha Po Lang" is an outstanding film, as Wilson Yip manages to present a great combination of crime thriller and martial arts film, through a unique view, that differs much from the plethora of HK action films.

With that said, where the film is supposed to excel (the action), it really does. While Chai is determined to keep Kit alive, the warden Ko (Zhang Jin) wants him dead to ensure the smooth operation of the prison, which is the front for Mr Hung's organ trafficking business. But luck is on ... When the operation goes sour, and the undercover cops are betrayed, Kit disappears without a trace. It's really only an excuse to see Donnie Yen whip out a can of whup ass.

Directed by Soi Cheang. June 21, 2007 Director Wilson Yip puts together a great cast for this HK crime thriller, but manages to pull off a blunder in which characters are sloppily scattered with shallow backstories.

The cast, like I said earlier, are terrific but Sammo Hung steals the show as the movie villain.
