what i wonder do these birds perch on a branch? I can stand beneath the tree (but it's too dark to see it) and it carries on regardless, nothing seems to make it fly off. I mentioned this phenomenon on PABIRDS and got a huge response so I decided to go into more detail here.According to Cornell Lab, hooded mergansers are silent except in courtship when the male gives a deep rolling frog-like sound, recorded Amy Taracido says their voice sounds like “merg merrrrrrrrg” – a perfect description and one that makes me laugh when I say it.Besides the sheer amusement of hearing a bird make this noise, it’s curious that this is considered a courtship sound. i think it was a hooded mergansers female, it had feet like a duck or heron, but landed on a branch in a tree, it didn’t move, but i got it to call, and it sounded like merg gerrrrr, pitch of a frog. They make a load sound like a green tree frog. I thought it was a frog, but when I approached, a bird took off and the meadow went silent. Males use their nasally barks to impress females. Though they lack the brilliant colors of other warbler species, breeding males are a crisp mixture of gray head, white stripe over the eye, and green back. They are hard to spot but fit your description. The fluffy white ptarmigan sounds more like a cartoon character (think Porky Pig or Glenn Quagmire) than an actual bird. It could drown them out!When I took this photo I was aiming at the leopard frog on the left…when I came home and uploaded my photos I noticed the toad in back on the right.
