Even the Rain is pure cinema, complete with some fruity subtitles in English. That's not the only local point of interest, as Maria(Cassandra Ciangherotti), a videographer assigned to the production, stumbles across some of the locals fighting for water rights. Displays middle-class progressives' smugly unconscious racism and classism. I appreciate that the film has good intentions, but the dialogue is so on the nose and the director has such a ferocious hatred for subtlety, that it makes me resistant to the whole endeavor. The story deals with a rebellion against a government which has attempted to (for all practical purposes) deny or restrict the poor's access to water.. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that I felt it could have spent more time developing the characters and the events that led to each person's action at the end. | Rating: 3/4 Makes the Taino look way more "primitive" than they actually were, falling into the "noble savage" stereotypes, but -- hey, it's a movie! I thought it well-grasped the idea of resistance of the indigenous peoples to colonialism. His movies are usually about substantial historic and political topics, so you will learn a lot in this meta-movie about colonization and current day injustices visited upon indigenous people. It juxtaposes Christopher Columbus' brutal colonisation of South American indigenous people against an unscrupulous government selling precious water resources ("even the rain") to a multi-nation corporation. | The movie also works on a personal level, detailing the loneliness of the long distance actor, via Anton's(Karra Elejalde) drinking, as one cannot be in one place for very long without being affected somehow.
