Like Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” last year before it, Tim Burton’s The most obvious and sustained tribute is, of course, to “Frankenstein.” The moviemaking boy, Victor Frankenstein, shares his name with the Promethean mad scientist of Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel and His circumstances are a bit different, though. It borrows freely from other films, including “Bride of Frankenstein” and “Godzilla”. Too many themes I'm bored of in horror, like kids bullying other kids and dogs getting croaked. "Victor, a sensitive, curious and misunderstood boy (voiced by Charlie Tahan), reanimates his dog, Sparky, in “Frankenweenie.”The New York Times critics on “Frankenweenie,” “Sister,” and “The Paperboy.” Astonishing imaginative feats — Sparky himself, and other reanimated critters it would be spoilerish to describe — are undermined by dispiriting imaginative lapses. Why can’t any girls compete in the science fair? How he must be smiling now, as a hugely successful and innovative director and film-maker; even able to turn a 1984 animated short into this feature-length film, with its bizarre creations and ghoulish preoccupations with the gothic and the macabre.
----- Thank you for watching. Partly, I realize, to set up a nifty “Godzilla” takeoff, but also, less forgivably, to supply a bit of cheap ethnic humor. It's just excellent. Love the romance between Sparky and the poodle next door, which rubs off on her, leaving 'lightening zig zags' on the sides of her head, that made me laugh.
