In "This Is Dr. It was definitely an interesting watch and kinda sad as well. If the stories sometimes use Creative Writing 101 devices (like a quasi-prophetic homeless woman), the total effect is as spare and haunting as the film's arid, beautifully shot setting. Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her (2000):Five loosely intertwined stories of the emotional issues facing individual middle-aged Angelenas are presented. Drama PG-13 (for mature thematic elements, sexual content and language) Her character is the one I felt more sad for then any of them besides Calista Flockhart. | What does it say when a picture like Rodrigo Garcia's lovingly detailed Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her, which won the first-time writer-director a prize at Cannes last year, doesn't make it to theaters in this country? and Holly Hunters. This is a story roughly surrounding seven women.

October 18, 2002 Development is a total surprise, and when her lover of three years (Gregory Hines) drops by the apartment, Rebecca’s condition — and the proper response to it — occupies little more than a minute of discussion. The lack of emotional, not to say moral, reaction to the pregnancy by both partners is startling — it’s a given that Rebecca will just “take care of it.” Garcia’s treatment is bracingly oblique and nonverbal.

Great acting by all. Don’t worry, it won’t take long.

Overall, there isn't a lot wrong with Things You Can Tell just by Looking at Her, but it fails to be truly extraordinary like the legendary director Garcia is imitating. A Southern California ensembler similar in format to "Short Cuts" and "Magnolia" but quite different in tone, not to mention length, "Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her" marks a promising directorial debut by Rodrigo Garcia. Worth seeing if you like chick flicks. We won’t be able to verify your ticket today, but it’s great to know for the future.Regal

Both actresses are aces as they deftly sketch in telling character details.Final episode, “Love Waits for Kathy,” centers upon the strong relationship between sisters Kathy (Amy Brenneman), a doctor who has put her romantic life on hold, and the blind Carol (Cameron Diaz), who enjoys a healthy sex life that seems like a natural extension of her boisterous, and amusingly self-deprecating, approach to life; she’s given to telling dates how great they look, and to comments such as, “Only the blind and the homeless walk in this city.”At this point, assorted other characters from earlier segments are neatly dropped into the mix, and Garcia even slips in an homage to Dad by having Carol read “One Hundred Years of Solitude” in Braille. Holly not so much for her relationship, but for what she gave up because of the relationship she had. I was not disappointed, in fact, I was pleasantly surprised. This attempt at a female collective effort doesn't work as well as other films in the genre but some of the performances really stand out..in particular the ever wonderful Glenn Close. In fact, strong performances by the entire cast, especially Gleen Close and Holly Hunter, keep this film from becoming a maudlin soap opera.
