It is certainly not for everybody. One of the seminal movies of the early 90s and one of Gus van Sant's best. 'My Own Private Idaho' is a great little off-beat movie. Heartfelt insight into the seedy world of underground male prostitutes with Shakespeare. I like the subject matter which I don't think has been explored enough by other films. Really amazing! This movie is like nothing I've ever seen. My Own Private Idaho (1991) is an independent drama film directed by Gus Van Sant (Drugstore Cowboy, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers' Under the Bridge).
This film is a surreal character study, following the misfit lives of a small group of 20 something rent boys. The directing and acting is excellent. It is one of my favourite films of all time. I gave 4 star for incomplete/short version of the film. This story is like a stream-of-consciousness biography of the two main characters.

Still, he's less "wooden" here than in other films of his I've seen. Keanu Reeves is adequate, but nowhere near the brilliance of Phoenix. However, it is a slightly peculiar indie film. The two stars (Reeves,Phoenix) took a major gamble as starring as said Rent boys.
With Natasha Lyonne, Clea DuVall, Michelle Williams, Brandt Wille. This is one of those movies that I will have to watch multiple times to fully appreciate it. It's a strange sort of film. Not with the homosexuality but with the sadness of lifestyle of these two individuals, Mike and Scott. I love the cameos made by actual hustlers from the streets of Portland, OR. i literally feel like my heart has been ripped out of my chest, stabbed with a nail gun and then screwed back into my chestA very poignant and well made film that depicts the fragility of homosexual relationships very well.
